Takeru Kobayashi (小林 尊), also known as Takeru 'Tsunami' Kobayashi, is a Japanese competitive eater. Born in Nagano, Japan, Kobayashi gained international recognition as the six-time champion of Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, where he popularized the sport of competitive eating. He set his first record in 2001 by consuming 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes, almost doubling the previous record. Throughout his career, Kobayashi continued to break his own records, winning the contest six consecutive times from 2001 to 2006. Additionally, he won the 2000 Japanese variety show 'TV Champion' Gluttony Championship by eating 16 bowls of ramen in one hour during the final. Kobayashi is often referred to as 'the godfather of competitive eating' and has significantly impacted the sport's popularity.
