Tim Pigott-Smith (13 May 1946 – 7 April 2017) was an English film and television actor and author. He gained recognition for his leading role as Ronald Merrick in the TV series The Jewel in the Crown, earning him a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 1985. Some of his notable TV appearances include The Chief, Midsomer Murders, The Vice, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, King Charles III, and Doctor Who. Pigott-Smith also had roles in films like Clash of the Titans, Gangs of New York, Johnny English, Alexander, V for Vendetta, Quantum of Solace, Red 2, and Jupiter Ascending. He was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, and received his education in Leicester and Stratford-upon-Avon.
