In 1858, eccentric governess Winifred Notty arrives at the remote gothic manor Ensor House, where her presence coincides with unexplained disappearances among the staff; the estate's owners grow suspicious of the new governess as secrets and tensions surface within the household, and alliances shift under a looming atmosphere of menace.
