What is Woke about?

Woke is a socially-conscious comedy series produced by Hulu that was first aired in 2020. The narrative revolves around African-American cartoonist Keef Knight, originally an agreeable character who avoids race issues. He maintains a light-hearted view of the world through his comics that are universally appealing due to their refusal to dwell into deeper racial tones. However, a life-altering racially-motivated incident changes Keef's perspective, waking him, hence the title, to his perception of race in America. He suddenly becomes able to hear and see inanimate objects talking and soon realizes that racism is inescapable, even in areas he previously believed were safe. His art then starts to reflect this newfound awareness. In its humor, Woke also explores serious issues, critiquing society’s racial inequalities and the struggle of being an African-American.
