Anthony Anderson portrays Andre Johnson, the patriarch of the Johnson family. Andre, also known as Dre, is a successful advertising executive who tries to impart his black cultural identity onto his children while living in a predominantly white neighborhood.

Tracee Ellis Ross plays Rainbow Johnson, Andre's wife and a doctor. Rainbow, often referred to as Bow, is biracial and brings a different perspective to the family dynamic. She is supportive of her husband's desire to maintain their cultural identity while also challenging him to see other perspectives.

Marcus Scribner portrays Junior Johnson, the eldest son of Andre and Rainbow. Junior is portrayed as intelligent but socially awkward, often providing comic relief through his eccentricities. He navigates the complexities of being a young black man in today's society.
